How to Enhance Aging Skin

Skin ages for a variety of reasons. It is part of the natural aging process for your body to start producing less collagen. Collagen is the natural product of the body that gives your skin its elasticity and fullness. This reduction in the production of collagen, leads to a lack of elasticity in the skin, which is unfortunately exacerbated by additional factors:

Exposure to sun: The UV light damages fibres in the skin called elastin, which gives the skin its ability to “bounce” back after stretching. Exposure to UV light can also cause unsightly melanomas and other skin blemishes. Protect your skin from the sun!

Smoking: Smokers have more wrinkles than people of the same age who haven’t smoked. No one is quite sure what causes this phenomenon.

Diet: Over dependence on processed and fatty food, coffee and alcohol etc. cause premature aging of the skin.

Normal aging: As I explained above, the reduction in the production of collagen results in the natural aging of the skin.

Gravity: As the skin loses its elasticity, gravity itself will cause your skin to start sagging.

Pollution: Those who have lived in urban environments all their lives, will have their natural aging process accelerated by the pollutants in modern urban environments.

Lack of Exercise: Exercise stimulates the sweat glands, and thereby rids the body of many toxins that can accelerate the aging process.

The first step to enhance aging skin is to limit further damage by dealing with:

Exposure to sun: Limit the time you spend in the sun. When you do go outdoors, wear protective clothing and apply a sunscreen, with a high protection factor, on the skin still exposed.

Smoking: Quit smoking, or at least try and cut down.

Diet: Cut out as much processed food as you can, and try and stick to natural, healthy, unprocessed food as much as possible.

Normal Aging: A good moisturiser can produce, at the very least, a temporary plumping of the skin.

Gravity: Facial yoga for ten minutes a day will stimulate the blood flow to the skin, and this will stimulate the production of collagen; which will then tighten the skin a little.

Pollution: Regular mechanical exfoliation will get rid of the dead, dry, outermost layer of skin, and stimulate the growth of new firmer skin cells.

Lack of Exercise: No matter what your age, everyone can benefit from exercise, even if it’s a gentle walk once a day. This will not only make your skin glow by increasing circulation, but will also add to a feeling of general wellbeing.

Natural Skin Care products There are a huge variety of natural skin care products, containing olive oil, aloe vera etc. that help to condition the skin.

There are, however, other more rapid ways to enhance aging skin surgically as well as non-surgical procedures that give instant improvement.

  • Procedures such as neck and face lifts
  • Liposuction
  • Coolsculpting
  • Chemical Peels
  • Botox
  • Skin fillers (some of these also promote collagen production)
  • Dermabrasion
  • Thermage
  • Diode Lasers

There are many different ways to enhance aging skin, from lifestyle changes to natural skin care products, non-surgical procedures and even surgical procedures. The choice is yours and will depend very much on how far you are willing to go to recover your youthful skin
