How does Laser Hair Removal Work?

Laser hair removal is defined as the process of removing unwanted hair by exposure to pulses of laser light that annihilate the hair follicle. Laser hair removal treatment revolves around selective photothermolysis (SPTL). This is the matching of a specific wavelength of light and pulse duration to achieve optimal effect on the targeted tissue while minimizing effect on the surrounding tissue. The lasers can cause localized damage by selectively heating melanin (dark target matter) in the area that causes hair growth (the follicle). This process is completed without heating the rest of the skin. Laser energy can be absorbed by dark matter in the skin because light is absorbed by dark objects. Dark matter, also known as a chromophore can be naturally-occurring or artificially introduced. Melanin is recognized as the primary chromophore for all hair removal lasers currently on the market. Melanin naturally occurs in the skin and gives both skin and hair colour. There are two types of melanin in hair. The selective absorption of photons of laser light make it impossible to remove hair that is not black or brown. Light skin and dark hair are the best possible combination for effective treatment. However, new lasers are now able to target black hair on patients with dark skin.

Laser hair removal has been approved by the FDA since 1997 and is recognized as a safe method of hair removal. Many patients decide to choose laser hair removal for its quick and long-lasting results. However, like anything, there are a few side effects associated with laser hair removal. These side effects include: itching, pink skin, redness, and swelling around the treatment area. These side effects rarely last more than a couple days with the most serious side effects being acne and skin discolouration.

Who Is the Best Candidate?

Laser hair removal is for anyone with black or brown hair, wanting to get rid of unwanted body hair. The process will take anywhere between three and eight sessions before going in for touch ups later on. Hair grows in several phases and a laser can only target the currently active growing hair. For this reason, several sessions are required to kill the hair in all phases of growth. The number of treatments depend on hair and skin colour. The shedding of the treated hair typically takes around two or three weeks but should not be pulled out manually in order to avoid infections.
