What to Eat and Avoid After Lip Injections for Faster Healing

Lip filler treatment being administered with an injection near the lips

Most people spend a lot of time thinking about what happens during lip filler. The aftercare conversation gets less attention, and that’s where things tend to go sideways.

What you eat and drink in the first few days after lip injections has a real effect on how your lips heal, how much swelling you experience, and how long your results last. None of it is complicated, but it’s worth knowing before your appointment, not after.

Why Food and Drink Affect Lip Filler Recovery

Lip tissue is thin and densely supplied with blood vessels. After injections, the area is inflamed and temporarily more reactive than usual. Anything that increases circulation, irritates the tissue, or puts mechanical stress on the lips can worsen swelling and bruising or slow the healing process.

The filler itself, typically a hyaluronic acid product like Restylane or Juvederm used at Yaletown Laser Centre, also attracts and holds water. In the early days post-treatment, that water retention contributes to the initial swelling. Diet choices that affect fluid balance or circulation can influence how pronounced that swelling gets.

None of this means your recovery will be difficult. It means a few days of straightforward adjustments can make a noticeable difference.

Foods and Drinks to Avoid After Lip Injections

Alcohol

Alcohol is the most commonly overlooked issue after injectable treatments. It dilates blood vessels and thins the blood, both of which can worsen bruising and swelling in an area that’s already inflamed. For the first 24 to 48 hours after lip injections, alcohol is worth skipping entirely. If you have an event coming up, timing your appointment with that in mind is a practical move.

Salty Foods

Salt causes fluid retention. After lip filler, when the lips are already holding more water than usual from both inflammation and the filler itself, a high-sodium meal can make the swelling look more pronounced. This doesn’t mean you’ll undo your results with a bag of chips, but keeping sodium moderate in the first few days after treatment is a reasonable step.

Spicy Foods

Spicy food increases blood flow to the face and can cause flushing. In freshly treated lips, this heightened circulation can worsen redness and prolong swelling. It’s also worth noting that eating very spicy food involves a lot of lip movement, which adds mechanical stress to tissue that’s still settling.

Very Hot or Very Cold Foods and Drinks

Temperature extremes aren’t great for recently treated lips. Hot beverages increase circulation to the area, and very cold food or drinks can cause discomfort when the lips are already sensitive. Lukewarm and room-temperature options are easier on the tissue while it heals.

Hard or Chewy Foods

This one is less about nutrition and more about movement. Biting into hard food, chewing tough textures, or eating anything that requires significant lip pressure can put unnecessary stress on an area where filler is still settling. The first 24 to 48 hours is when this matters most.

Blood-Thinning Supplements

This applies before and after treatment. Fish oil, vitamin E, and high-dose garlic supplements can thin the blood similarly to alcohol. If you’re taking these regularly, it’s worth mentioning at your consultation. Many providers suggest pausing them for a few days on either side of your appointment.

What to Eat After Lip Injections

The flip side of the above is that anti-inflammatory foods can support a smoother recovery.

Foods high in vitamin C, like citrus fruits, bell peppers, and leafy greens, support collagen production and help tissue repair. Foods with natural anti-inflammatory properties, including ginger, turmeric, and omega-3-rich fish, can help keep systemic inflammation in check. Plain, soft foods in the first day or two are practical and gentler on treated tissue.

Hydration matters more than most people expect. Drinking enough water helps the body process the normal inflammatory response and supports the hyaluronic acid filler in doing what it’s designed to do. Room-temperature water is fine. Hot herbal teas, especially those with blood-thinning herbs like ginkgo, are worth avoiding in the first 48 hours.

A Few Other Recovery Notes Worth Knowing

Food isn’t the only variable. A few additional habits affect healing in the same window:

Avoiding intense exercise for 24 to 48 hours is generally recommended because elevated heart rate increases blood flow to the face and can worsen swelling. Skipping saunas, steam rooms, and hot showers in the same period is for the same reason.

Touching or pressing on the lips should be avoided unless your provider has specifically instructed otherwise. Filler can be displaced with significant pressure in the early days after treatment.

Sun exposure is worth limiting as well. UV exposure can break down hyaluronic acid filler over time, so wearing SPF and avoiding prolonged sun in the first couple of weeks after treatment is practical advice, not just a general skincare recommendation.
