How Do Facial Fillers Work?

Non-surgical cosmetic treatments like facial fillers are becoming hugely popular, but what are facial fillers? How do they work? And is it the same as Botox? We explain the science behind the cosmetic advance that is allowing men and women to subtly sculpt their faces to the very best advantage.

The Why and How of Facial Fillers

There are actually several reasons why facial fillers could improve your appearance. They can be used as an anti-aging treatment, replacing lost volume and reducing wrinkles by “filling,” or they can be used to make subtle alterations in the shape of the face or facial features.

Because some of the uses of facial fillers are similar to those of Botox, they are often confused. Both can reduce lines, but while Botox does this by relaxing muscles, fillers do it by physically plumping up the area. As a result, fillers can also be used to get results that can’t be achieved using Botox.

What is the Treatment Like?

Facial fillers are popular because they achieve subtle results without the risk and expense of surgery. Typically, the treatment will only take a few minutes, but if you are going for a first-time consultation, you should factor in additional time that the clinician will use to gauge your expectations and make recommendations accordingly.

After the series of carefully-placed injections of which your treatment consists, you can go right back to your daily routine as if nothing had happened.

What Types of Facial Filers are There?

Hyaluronic acid is the basis of many of the most popular facial fillers available today. The reasons is simple. Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in skin, so the chances of any adverse reaction to a “foreign” substance are practically non-existent.

Apart from its excellent safety profile, hyaluronic acid is also known to stimulate collagen production. So, although the full effect of dermal fillers isn’t permanent, they nevertheless have a rejuvenating effect. It is also known that less hyaluronic acid is needed to get the same effect when treatments are repeated.

Usually, the injections last a few months, but there are people who report positive effects for up to a year or more.

Synthetic wrinkle fillers require greater caution an expertise. The effect is longer-lasting – and can even be near-permanent. However, there is also a greater chance of an adverse reaction to the filler, so although a few products are deemed safe, they aren’t as popular as hyaluronic acid.

Are Fillers Right for Me?

At our practice, our priority is not selling treatments; it’s achieving the results people want. If you’re hoping to make subtle changes to your appearance without surgery, your first step is to consult a professional who upholds our standard of ethics.

Our experience and technology allows us to clarify exactly what you want to achieve and then recommend the treatments most likely to give you the results you’ll love.

Injectables, including Botox and dermal fillers, are safe and deliver excellent results, but we may recommend other treatments or a combination of treatments depending on what you want to achieve. Remember: the results are subtle. It’s still “you,” just you at your very best.
