We would like to pay tribute to all our wonderful dads, dads-in-law, grand-dads and great grand-dads. They work through, endure and give so much often times with quiet resolute. Traditionally, fathers are supposed to be the backbone of our family--chart the family path, create a life of abundance, provide for all material needs and solve our problems when we mess up in life. Kids of any age and generation often think their fathers do not understand them or indeed take the time to really communicate with them. Yet, we in the West rarely give thanks to them, rarely show our love openly--habitually for fear that they do not like nor need our expressive and communicative love and reverence. My trips to India over the last five years have taught me so much about the power of paternal guidance and I am in awe of the respect and reverence that fathers are accorded in the East.

So, today I personally want to publicly acknowledge first, my own dad whose memory I live in each and every day. My father was my strength, my backbone, my certainty--he believed in my dreams and encouraged me always to seek excellence in anything I did. I remember fondly my long walks with him at six in the morning and the tremendous efforts he went to, to create an enabling environment for me to pursue my academics and interests. It is through his vision and foresight that we as a family of 5 children have had the blessings of a superb education in London and have pursued the professional paths we have chosen. He was not a man of the world; perhaps he may have been considered a maverick or even a recluse. He was for me, my most steady and strong influence during the first 10 years of my life.

I also most particularly want to acknowledge and pay tribute to Dr Omar Kassam, the Father of my four amazing sons, for bringing forth a generation of young men that God willing, will be contributive members of our society. The fruit doesn't fall far from the tree. My sons are the kind and wonderfully balanced gentlemen they are because of the incredible role model my husband, Dr Omar Kassam, has been; he himself being the product of the incredible love and mentorship of his own father.



Never have I witnessed a father more dedicated and devoted to his progeny as Omar has been. His joie de vivre effuses all we do. He gently, but firmly guides our boys in matters of the world. Many a teenage groan have been expressed when he pursues with vigour discussions about the continuum of all religions and shared spiritual values, the need for pluralistic and peaceful societies, our innate societal responsibilities, the clash of tradition with that of modernity, the demise of societal value systems, the realm of the spirit, the importance of balance, the pitfalls of negative social habits and the lure of the mighty dollar.

The boys have heard it all and now truly appreciate the long and vociferous dialogues as they grow into young men themselves. Often laughter has been Omar's strength in creating a realization. He has a way of listening intensely, and for better or worse (depending where the boys' paradigm is and where the boys are positioned on a given day!) he always creates a sense of understanding, learning and generational wisdom in the end. Sternly but lovingly--tough love or sweet love, my kids know their dad will at the drop of a hat, gallivant across the world to be there for them. So crazy is his love, he recently traveled 16 hours on a plane just to connect with one of his boys at school for lunch and a chat only to return right back. My boys are fortunate and blessed to know he is always there, in all ways and for that I am eternally grateful and live with a sense of gratitude, confidence and equanimity.

So, I urge you today, this week, this month, please call and visit your dad, grand-dad, dad-in-law and let them know how deeply you love them, how much you appreciate them, heal any differences and celebrate your connectedness. You will create such happiness and joy that the blessings set forth will be experienced by your entire family.
