A Guide to Botox
Have you always wanted to maintain flawless skin and a lineless face well into your 40’s and beyond? Have you considered Botox but aren’t sure if it’s right for you? Are you curious about what Botox can do for you? You’re not alone; thousands and thousands of people are looking for a solution to eliminate pesky facial lines and sagging skin. Botox is often the solution that they choose but many people don’t even know what it is, how it works, and the benefits even after receiving treatment. So what is Botox, what can it really do, how does it work, what is the cost, what are the risks involved, and how can you choose the right clinic to get your next treatment?
What is Botox?
Botox, also called botulinum toxin type A, is derived from the bacteria that causes botulism. Botulinum toxin blocks nerve activity in the muscles, causing a temporary restriction in muscle activity. Botox is most prolifically used to temporarily lessen the appearance of facial wrinkles.
How does Botox work?
Botox works by blocking the signals from the nerves to the muscles. The muscle that has been injected with the Botox is no longer able to contract, which causes the wrinkles to relax and soften. At our Vancouver Laser Centre we commonly use Botox to reduce forehead lines, crow’s feet, and frown lines.
How does the procedure involve?
Receiving Botox treatment takes only a few minutes and does not require anesthesia. Botox is injected with a very fine needle into specific muscles and is relatively painless. Results are typically seen within 3-7 days and it is best to avoid alcohol at least one week before treatment.
What is the cost of Botox?
The cost of Botox treatments varies from around $10 per unit if administered by a family physician or trained nurse to $15-$17 per unit if it’s injected by a dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon. The results typically last approximately 3-4 months.
